News from the DRC & Lighting at White Rock Lake!
As you may know, the city of Dallas passed a major bond initiative in 2006 to fund several park improvements, including additional trail lighting at White Rock Lake. This lighting would help users of the lake (runners, cyclists and motorists alike) to more easily see one another at night as well as minimize accidents caused by cracks in the trail itself. The Dallas Running Club would benefit greatly from the additional lighting, as our runners, training groups, race directors and volunteers use the lake extensively and often in the dark.
The city hired lighting consultants to design environmentally conscious lighting plans to prevent light pollution while enhance the lighting at the lake for safety at night. The city wants to put these lights in and they have already been approved and funded by local voters.

(con't):
Unfortunately, a small but vocal group of area residents are opposed to installing more lighting at the lake, complaining of light pollution among other things. To date these residents have been well represented and very vocal at city planning meetings, whereas the much larger running community has largely been absent.
The city has revised the plan and is presenting a final public presentation on the lighting issue this week. It is critical that the running community shows up in numbers to endorse trail lighting. By not showing up, we could lose the lights on the trails. We cannot afford to let this opportunity pass us by.
